12th June 2014 - Recession led to suicides

A report on 12th June 2014 analysed suicide statistics and came to the conclusion that suicides increased markedly after the 2008 financial crash. The report said 'suicides had been declining in Europe until 2007. By 2009 there was a 6.5% increase, a level that was sustained until 2011.'  Also 'losing a job, having a home repossessed and being in debt were the main risk factors.'

Sweden, Finland and Austria however did not show such a marked increase, possibly because these countries invest in schemes that help people return to work, such as training, advice and subsidised wages.
