14th June 1864 - Alois Alzheimer born

Alois Alzheimer, a German physician and pathologist, was born on 14th June 1864.

In 1901 a 51-year-old female patient, Auguste D, was admitted to the Hospital for the Mentally Ill and Epileptics in Frankfurt, Germany. Her husband, a railway clerk, had found it increasingly difficult to care for her and had noticed signs of deterioration for about 8 months. The next day Alois Alzheimer interviewed the patient, who showed signs of memory loss, language disorder and unpredictable behaviour. Alois Alzheimer followed the patient with interest until her death in 1906 when he examined her brain using a new staining technique and reported that there were both plaques and neural tangles.

This form of pre-senile dementia was given the name "Alzheimer's disease" by Emil Kraepelin a few years later.

Alzheimer’s disease is now also recognised as the most common cause of senile dementia. According to the NHS page on Alzheimers it is estimated to affect 1 in 14 people over age 65 and 1 in 6 people over age 80.
