4th June 1938 - Sigmund Freud escapes the Nazis

Sigmund Freud escaped from Vienna to London on June 4th 1938. Hitler and the Nazis disliked psychoanalysts, and hated Jews. Freud was a Jewish psychoanalyst.

The Nazis annexed Austria on March 12th 1938, and appointed a Nazi to run every business that had been owned by Jews, including that of Freud who was a psychoanalyst and publisher. Freud did however have an international reputation, and important friends who first tried to protect him, and then helped him escape when things looked like going from bad to worse.

Four of Freud’s sisters stayed behind, and three died in concentration camps.
