5th June 2004 - Ronald Reagan died

Ronald Wilson Reagan died on 5th June 2004, having suffered with Alzheimer's for ten years.

He said after his diagnosis, "I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease ... At the moment I feel just fine. I intend to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have always done ... I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead. Thank you, my friends. May God always bless you."

President Reagan had been a film actor who became the 40th President of the United States from 1981 to 1989. He was, at the time, the oldest man to be elected President.

The Alzheimer's Society says 'Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are not a part of normal aging, but they effect 1 in 6 people over the age of 80 in the UK.'
